RamsTrust’s latest project, the great new book called “Derby ‘Til I Die”, is chock-full of great Derby County moments, as told by supporters themselves. Dozens of fans living at home and away - aged from age 9 to 90 years - have told their favourite memories of being a Rams fan, with recollections looking back right from the 1920s up to the present day.
‘Derby Til I Die’ is YOUR book, written by the fans, for the fans. It’s a project undertaken by RamsTrust in partnership with The National Literacy Trust, The Department for Children, Schools and Families, Supporters Direct and The Football Foundation. Not only has it enabled die-hard fans to recount wonderful Derby County memories; the project will also see 600 copies of the book distributed free to schools, libraries and youth & community organisations.
The book is part of a national literacy project with a major aim being to stimulate youngsters in reading and writing by engaging them in stories about their football club. Derby ‘Til I Die demonstrates that everyone can be a writer and that your club evokes so many classic memories that others want to read.
With introductory notes from Tom Glick, Paul Jewell and Jim Smith, there are also fascinating recollections from lifelong fans who have been some of the club’s most renowned servants - ‘the team behind the team’, including Ernie Hallam, Gordon Guthrie, and Marian McMinn.
Then there are the funny, sad, whimsical and crazy tales from many other fans who have followed Derby County home and away over the decades. There’s the baby who had a season ticket in his name even before he was born, the fanatic who recorded a Derby County pop song and was later awarded an MBE by the Queen for his fundraising work in football. Many other great accounts and rare photographs are included within the pages of Derby ‘Til I Die, so it is also a unique heritage record and a collector’s item.
Read about meeting Cloughie, Arthur Cox, and star players like Roy McFarland and Archie Gemmill, seeing Derby County’s League Championship glory days and their Wembley exploits, the childhood thrills of being a mascot or suffering the consequences of bunking off school to get to a game!
